An Introduction to Java

Java is a higher-level language made by Sun Microsystems. It is one of the most popular programming languages in the world. A large sum of programming and other stem-related jobs use java to carry out a large number of tasks. Java code can run on all platforms that support it without having to recompile.

Java runs on something called the JVM or the Java virtual machine. This virtual machine lets a computer run java. Java is used to run android phones, it is used to make video games such as Minecraft, and much more.

Setting up an IDE/Code Environment

Before we get started, you will need a code editor or IDE. IDE stands for Integrated Development Environment. It’s the place where you will edit all of your code! For this course, we will be using an online tool called Replit. The link is above.

It's a great solution for programming, as it does all of the hard work for us, so we can jump straight into the code. To get started, do the following:

  • Go to the Replit website and make a free account
  • Click the button that says + New repl or the + in the top right
  • Choose Java as your language, and press Create repl

And that's it! You will learn what the code that's already in Main.java does in the next lesson.
