What is an API?

An API is a way of extracting a set of objects, functions, and data sets from a service which you do not already have. There are many currently functioning API’s that grant you functions, objects, or data from a database or a service. For example, there is a Google Maps API that lets an application or a user use Google Maps and query for information from Google Maps. The Google Maps API lets developers integrate Google maps into their application. There are plenty more examples of this such as a Waze API for traffic data, an Accuweather API that lets developers access weather data, and much more.
